The Library of Skins

Every skin that can be worn is already written

The Library
of Skins

Its hexagonal rooms hold every Minecraft skin that can exist, including the one you wear and the one you are about to draw. Each skin is written on one page, and each page has an address. Nobody made them. They have always been here.

3.06 × 1023,581 skins. Written out in full, that number has 23,582 digits. The faint digits behind this page are the start of it.

A Library of Babel for Minecraft skins

In Borges' 1941 story "The Library of Babel", a library holds every possible book of 410 pages. This site does the same for Minecraft skins. The player model shows 3,264 pixels, and every way of colouring them is on exactly one page. That includes every skin anyone has ever worn, so yours is here too.

The pages are shelved the way Borges shelved his books. A volume has 410 pages and a shelf holds 32 volumes. A wall has 5 shelves, and each hexagon, a six-sided room, has 4 walls of shelves. A page's address lists all five: hexagon, wall, shelf, volume and page.

Random skins in 3D

Wander opens a random page, so the Library doubles as a random Minecraft skin generator. Expect noise: every pixel on a random page is an independent random colour, and the result looks like television static. Each page shows its skin on a 3D model you can rotate, with the flat texture beside it. "Download skin" saves the PNG, ready to upload to Minecraft.

Find your Minecraft skin

In the Minecraft skin editor, press "Bring your own skin" or draw part of a skin, then press "Search the Library". You land on the page that holds it. The search runs in your browser, so your skin is never sent anywhere. How the Library works explains why every skin has exactly one page.
